weekly retro #89: cold, code, clay

this was one of the, maybe, 4 weeks in the year that i felt really good physically and mentally together. i was hoping that using my little energy to go out to inspiring spaces would help me get up to a few more good weeks. we'll see, i'm hopeful after this last one!

it helps my mentality and physicality that the weather is finally getting cooler. i loathe the large air conditioner units that take up my two favorite windows, so having our landlord cart those away for the season felt so freeing and our apartment looks so much more open and sunny again.

those units being gone also leaves more surfaces for pumagreg to roll around on. the window is like his "cold plunge" after a morning of toasting on his heating pad. i don't know who taught him how to relax, but he's a pro and we could all learn a little something from the guy.

a photo of my hand holding up an origami dolphin i made from white paper

i'm still going strong on my weird web october submissions. it's good for me to write a little silly code in the morning with my coffee. this experience also leaves me with lots of little apps to go back to and refine and evolve next month. and i'm always learning new skills, like origami!

tomorrow we hit the halfway point of the sfpc session with the game dev class i enrolled in. after a couple weeks of purely word-based games, i'm excited to get back into visual work again. we're learning ren'py and i'm hoping to make a syntax highlighting extension for nova - the editor i write my code, and also these blog posts, on - so i don't have to put vs code on my computer.

a screenshot of my phone with two thumbnails, each of a closed vessel i just threw on the wheel

ceramics is moving along quite nice. i've been getting my new bigger shelf organized, i brought home my jack o'lantern and started making a bunch of bananas. i wanted to share two cool vessels in the photo above that i had to smash and offer to the reclaim bucket because there was no way to remove them from the wheel intact - someone walked off with both of my wire tools - and seemingly all of the community tool section ones, and my new one didn't arrive in time for that session. i've got one now and i'm just going to have to watch it like a hawk.

a photo of my computer showing a p5 collage that is interactive and live, me and others attending the talk have added little shapes to the screen

i went to wordhack and then attended ccfest virtually, so my cup of creative coding inspiration was quite full. i pitched a talk for a future wordhack, so keep an eye out for an official announcement.

a photo of aromatic aster, an adorable cluster of little lavender daisy-like flowers with skinny petals, all peeking through a cast iron fence

plantnet identified these as aromatic asters and i had to share them here because they stopped me in my tracks as i was walking home from the gym the other day. even with the cool air and falling leaves, it's so nice to see pops of purple and other non-autumnal organic colors.

things i enjoyed this week

i'm seeing the elizabeth holmes doc tomorrow, so i gotta stay offline until then so it's not spoiled. lucky for the theater, i cannot find the blonde wig i got for the year i was her for halloween, so i'm just going to have to go as myself.

xoxo jenn

p.s. a couple of people have come up to me in the real world and told me that they read these retros and i appreciate that. ending the week doing a retrospective before planning the next week has been such a fulfilling practice that also helps me manage my adhd and brain fog. i encourage you all to try this out for yourself - even if it's not weekly or not even public.
