weekly retro #69: no i will not just title this one 'nice'
yesterday was saturday and it felt like a sunday. today is sunday and it feels like some other kind of day. i'm coming out of a period fog but things are still a bit hazy. writing, editing, and perhaps showering will cure me. welcome to the 69th weekly retro.
i managed to get two of my 3-minute vlogs out into the world in time for this post, last week's and a this very fresh latest one. i enjoy the constraint of 3 minutes, especially because it's a way less daunting task to both capturea and edit throughout the week. my friend asked if "the algorithm" likes it and honestly i am not in a "caring about the algorithm" era of my life, i'm just expressing myself. this life is not sponsored by better help. it's sponsored by gmo's and seed oils.
jamie and i were back at wonderville on memorial day for a packed monday night of robot karaoke. we had a record 56 songs in the queue if i remember the number correctly. my opening demo song was sk8r boi with lyrics coming from ycombinator startup one-line bios. my favorite combo was reviews of the hollywood sign sung to the tune of hole's malibu.
i want to give a shout out to my partner, andy, who had a couple of big projects come out this week. one was this awesome nes cart for the band daydream plus that he programmed. the other is a big update to telemelt. andy has the same curse as i do where our biggest wins happen during the most inconvenient, chaotic time. i don't often admire men, but i admire him.
in a few days, pumagreg gets the leg that holds his cancer amputated, so there's a lot of anxious energy that i'm trying to redirect into preparation. i got him some little steps to his favorite places, which he's already enjoying. in weird fortune, my period came a few days early than expected, so i don't have to deal with that on top of getting him to and from nyc for the surgery.
are my hormones finally working for me, or will i come to find out they are betraying me. i'll figure that out at my endocrinologist in a couple of weeks. for now, after i publish this, my focus is on pumagreg.
things i enjoyed this week
- i made these buttered noodles which aren't exactly buttered noodles and andy really enjoyed them. i think during our toughest times, nothing is quite as soothing and low effort as a good bowl of buttered pasta.
- my curiosity piqued at these men going into the sewer for unknown reasons because it also happened last year but there's never any follow up on what they are doing! i've enjoyed the absurdity of how these get reported, as "men emerging from manhole covers" and commenters all saying it's the teenage mutant ninja turtles. we are not a serious species lol.
- i have consistently liked the quality and flavor of schar products, specifically the crackers, in case you're looking for a gluten free alternative that isn't full of seeds or a bad after taste.
- i often walk by an arc-teryx wondering who it's for - like, real hikers aren't spending $500 for a cropped raincoat right? anyway this video about algorithmic fashion made it make sense.
while this will be an intense week, i have to remember to take time for myself. after a holiday week off, i got back tomorrow to touching clay, and instead of picking my phone up to doomscroll i'm picking up books and paints. instead of wallowing in worry through pumagreg's surgery and recovery, i'll be documenting the process to share with others who may encounter the same ordeal. i will not be emerging from the sewer in a mysterious fashion.
